Artist Notes
“Someday” is a handcut paper collage that delves into the intricate dance between the need for love and companionship and the longing for solitude and independence. This artwork encapsulates the nuanced understanding that freedom can be found in being alone, yet true liberation often comes from sharing life with someone who complements and frees you in ways you cannot achieve alone.
The central figure in “Someday” symbolizes the eternal quest for freedom and the capacity to dream. She represents the comfort and safety she seeks amidst her fears. Her pose reflects a poignant longing for connection, yet there is a palpable distance she maintains, driven by an intense fear of losing those she loves. “Someday” captures the essence of a person who holds others at arm’s length, self-sabotaging relationships to avoid the pain of inevitable loss. The choice of aloneness offers a semblance of control and safety, yet it poses a profound question — is this truly living?
The collage invites viewers to explore the duality of human experience: the deep yearning for companionship and the simultaneous desire for independence. It reflects the courage it takes to love despite the fear of loss, and the beauty of cherishing the present moment with those we hold dear. The imagery speaks to her existential dilemma: she has so much love to give but is paralyzed by the fear of death, the ultimate separation. She questions whether she will ever reunite with loved ones in another lifetime, yearning to cherish them in their current, unique existence.
